Documentary Photography & Video (PHOT 210)
This course is designed to provide students with a strong understanding of the traditions of documentary photography and video work. The course explores photo-documentary traditions within North America from the 1930s, to the present day placement of documentary work within contemporary art practices and the conceptual development of this genre within the digital age. The main focus of this class is to create a documentary based project from each students interests and research. A broad range of artists are covered from Walker Evans to Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, Diane Arbus, Larry Towell and Susan Meiselas. Emerging and current practices within photography and video are investigated including the work of Stan Douglas, Jeff Wall, Sarah Anne Johnson and Raymonde April.
